The most coveted bag and shoe of the season, cited overwhelmingly by brick-and-mortar buyers and e-tailers, would make any inner hippie happy: Salvatore Ferragamo’s fringed bag, and Valentino’s lace-up gladiator sandal.

“Fringe is really flirty, but also artistic,” says Sarah Easley of Kirna Zabête. “Fringe is festive.”

While plenty of designers showed suede fringe, Ferragamo’s version is done in calfskin leather and woven viper, with artisanal Italian hand-blown Murano glass handles.

“This bag is like the Picasso Les Demoiselles d’Avignon of fashion,” says Fivestory’s Claire Distenfeld, explaining, “it’s when high luxury is intrigued with the juxtaposition of the most complex and sophisticated shapes and materials next to primitive and historic characteristics.…When done right, that can create the most fascinating look.”

Mary Chiam, Moda Operandi’s vice president of merchandising, cites Ferragamo’s accessories as “the best use of luxury exotic fabrics and a great incorporation of fringe.” At retail, the bags will range from $5,800 to $8,500.

Valentino’s calf leather sandals range from $1,345 to $1,875.

“It really is a nice novelty for next summer,” says Jennifer Cuvillier, style director at Le Bon Marché.

Sasha Sarokin, buying manager at Net-a-porter, calls gladiator sandals a “hero moment” of the season, describing the Valentino shoes as “modern, sleek and boasting just enough hardware to add some eye interest. They can look great dressed down with summer staples such as sundresses and denim shorts, but also dressed up with evening gowns for a more relaxed approach to elegance.”

Adds Justin O’Shea, buying director for Munich-based luxury e-tailer MyTheresa, “Even if you’re wearing a gladiator sandal this summer, I can guarantee you that you won’t be having as much fun as someone wearing these Valentinos.”

See you at Woodstock.
